As the market for cars in general and American cars in particular continued to wane, the Ford Motor Company had some vital decisions to make. When Ford announced the decision to discontinue making the Lincoln Town Car, it did provide a replacement vehicle aimed squarely at the livery market.
Under the influence of Edsel Ford, Lincoln Motor Company was purchased by Henry Ford for $8 million ($123,689,861 in 2020 dollars) on February 4, 1922. While Lincoln was valued at $16 million, a $5 million bid by Ford was the sole bid received for the company (forced to be increased by the court).
Mazda Motor Company Rising to prominence in the U.S. during the 1970's with the Wankel rotary engine and the beloved RX-7 sports coupe, Mazda was part owned by Ford Motor Company from 1974 to 2015 and now stands as its own entity.
