The good news is that despite the town's rich history, Plymouth has the modern amenities that you'd want to find when moving to an area and is an excellent place to raise a family. Although the Pilgrims were not starving, their sea-diet was very high in salt, which weakened their bodies on the long journey and during that first winter. As many as two or three people died each day during their first two months on land. Only 52 people survived the first year in Plymouth.
It's swimmable at all stages of the tide - although high tide is best - but can be a bit stony so swim shoes are advised. There is an official swim zone marked by yellow buoys which restricts the speed of boat traffic entering the are but please DO NOT swim out further than the buoys.
Plymouth is relatively inexpensive compared to big city living. Rent is generally between 40% to 60% cheaper than in London. Rent is around 25% cheaper. So, while Plymouth is not one of the most expensive places to live, you will have to pay up for the quality of life.Sep 20, 2016
